Mila Kunis x WSJ: Hairstyle Breakdown with Anh Co Tran

For Mila Kunis’ exclusive WSJ editorial, celebrity hairstylist Anh Co Tran created modern, Lived-In Waves that feel effortless yet intentional. The soft, touchable hairstyle was designed for movement and effortless flexibility on set. Here’s the full breakdown of how to achieve Mila’s look:

Prepping The Foundation

Anh began with Mila’s hair damp.

He applied 1.5 palm sizes of Milbon&’s Monochromatic Froth Blowout Foam throughout her hair to prep for heat styling, add body, and tame frizz. This created a smooth, workable base for styling.

Next, he added Milbon’s Anti-Frizz Humidity Blocking Oil from mid-shaft to ends to provide weightless protection against humidity during the shoot.

Anh then rough-dried the hair to maintain natural texture.

First, working section by section, Anh misted her hair with Milbon’s Flex Memory Hold Hairspray 7 before curling. The lightweight spray, doubling as both a working and finishing spray, allows the curls to set without the stiffness.

Anh’s Pro Tip: Use the Flex Memory Hold Hairspray 7 when recurling the hair. Milbon’s elevated reformulation has new ingredients that provide up to 450º of heat protection, perfect to use as a working spray as you style!

Using a 1.25” curling iron, he then created Lived-In Waves – Anh Co Tran’s signature technique – by alternating each curl forward and backward. He worked from the bottom upward, keeping the pattern organic and dimensional.

Anh then established a clean middle part to anchor Mila’s look.

Adding Texture & Movement

To enhance separation and texture, Anh applied Milbon’s Weightless Dry Texture Spray 4, focusing on the areas of her hair that needed extra movement.

He followed with another light mist of the Flex Memory Hold Hairspray 7 to maintain flexible control. This allowed Mila the versatility to shift her hair from side to side during the interview for an effortless, relaxed look, while keeping the integrity of her style intact.

Setting The Finished Look

To seal the look and tame any lingering flyaways, Anh finished her look with Milbon’s Firm Hold Shielding Hairspray 10, locking everything in place while preserving her softness and natural waves.

The final result? Elevated, lived-in texture with movement, versatility, and effortless edge. By layering flexible hold hairsprays, dry texture spray, and humidity protection, Anh ensured Mila’s hair maintained movement all day long without losing its structure.
