Watch: How to Get Chloë Grace Moretz’s Pumped Up Pony

At this point in the summer, you’re probably experiencing ponytail fatigue. Luckily, celebrity hair god Anh Co Tran stopped by PeopleStyle HQ to show us a new way to spice up our ponies, inspired by his client Chloë Grace Moretz’s recent edgy updo. Watch Tran at work for our “How It’s Done” video series above.

First, the International L’Oréal Professionnel Stylist adds a drop of oil for softness and shine. (Pro note: He recommends second or third day hair for best results.) Then he clips front sections away from the back of the head, before building the pony — at an upward angle — and securing it with a clear elastic. After your pony is nice and tight, it’s time to release the front two sections and begin teasing the remaining hair from the root in 3-inch sections. Brush through the newly teased hair to smooth out the texture, and then back comb the section toward the pony. Slowly start to roll this section toward the ponytail and place it over the opposite side of the pony. Secure it with bobby pins, wrapping the end around the base of the ponytail. It should have a pompadour-inspired look. Finish by running a flat iron over the pony to make it extra smooth.
