Anh & Nina Discuss: Styling with Monochromatic
The Monochromatic Collection was created to simplify styling. Co-developed by Anh Co Tran and Milbon&, each lightweight, buildable product can be layered throughout the styling process, from prep, as a finisher, or to refresh your look.
Anh invited hairstylist Nina (@nina.adado) into the salon to show her how Monochromatic works seamlessly behind the chair. He created two different hairstyles on her – Natural Curls and a Romantic Updo – while discussing the products, techniques, and what surprised Nina most.
Look 1: Natural Curls
Nina has amazing 3B curls! For her first look of the day, Anh wanted to highlight how Monochromatic can work within her everyday, curly-hair routine.
The Styling Breakdown
- Scrunch two pea-sized amounts of Velvet Texturizing Cream throughout damp hair.
- Add a palmful of Froth Blowout Foam from roots to ends, being sure to scrunch the product into the curls.
- Proceed with diffusing.
- When almost dry, add more Velvet, approximately one pea-size amount, all over to define and separate the curls.
- Diffuse again until dry.
Nina’s Take
Nina shared that her hair texture has been changing, so she’s been looking for a new combination of products that will work with her curls and evolving hair texture. Before the styling session with Anh, she had only ever used Froth and Velvet for blowouts. This was her first time seeing them used in a curly-hair routine, and she was pleasantly surprised by how light and fluffy it left her hair without feeling crunchy or stiff. She loved how it defined her curls and tamed unruly pieces.
Anh’s application pro tip for Nina’s curls: Apply Velvet first for hydration, then layer Froth on top to seal in the moisture and tame frizz.

Look 2: Romantic Updo
Next, Anh styled Nina’s curls into a romantic updo style, using Velvet to create separation and hydration. He then added some fun hair accessories to accentuate the final look.
The Styling Breakdown
- Work a pea size of the Velvet Texturizing Cream from mid-lengths to ends for hydration.
- Pull the hair back into a ponytail, leaving out face framing curls.
- Scrunch another pea size of Velvet into the ponytail length to create separation.
- Twist the hair into a bun and pin into place.
- Detail the face-framing curls with additional Velvet to define the curls.
- Add jeweled pins for an extra touch!
Nina’s Take
For the upstyle, Nina loved to see how Anh used Velvet for final detailing, using it little by little. She liked how Anh took the time to curate the shape of her updo, deciding on what pieces to leave out. Velvet became Anh’s finishing tool throughout the style. Rather than applying one large amount at the beginning or end, he layered small amounts at a time as he worked to define the curls, refine the silhouette, and accentuate her face-framing pieces.
