Modern Interpretation of Tradition: The Maru-Mage
For the first time in three years, Anh had the opportunity to organize and execute a mesmerizing commercial and editorial shoot, capturing the essence of Milbon’s birthplace.
Join us as we embark on a journey and explore four distinct looks inspired by Anh’s remarkable expedition to Nakagawa in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan that showcase Anh’s modern interpretation of breaking boundaries while also harnessing the traditional essence of Japan.
Continue below to learn more about Anh’s steps to create the first look!
This specific look was inspired by a traditional Japanese Maru-mage. Anh was inspired by the tubular rolled shape that was featured in this hairstyle.
STEP 1
First, Anh prepped damp hair with a bit of Milbon’s Heat Protective Mist in order to ensure that the hair is protected when using hot tools.
STEP 2
Then he sprayed Milbon’s Thickening Mist 4 on the roots of the hair and Texturizing Sea Mist 3 from midshaft to ends for added texture.
STEP 3
He then blow-dried the hair out in a C motion to give the hair extra body, followed by smoothing out the ends.
STEP 4
Then, Anh created a radial section part then split the hair from ear to ear to separate the front and the back.
STEP 5
Focusing on the front he created a deep side part and created a larger, loose roll on the side with more hair.
He combed the hair out and rolled it inwards on itself then secured the curl with bobby pins from the inside.
STEP 6
He then took the section with less hair and created another curl and secured it right behind the bigger one with a few bobby pins.
Now on to the back section
STEP 7
To emulate the way that hair curls naturally, Anh took a 1.5-inch Pro Marcel Iron and gently curled the hair for a soft and effortless effect.
STEP 8
He then sprayed a bit of Milbon’s Dry Texturizing Spray 4 to enhance the hair’s texture.
STEP 9
To finish the look off, he sprayed the hair with Milbon’s Strong Hold Hairspray 7 for a long-lasting, lightweight hold.
